GYPSIES – GREAT PEOPLE
I miss the gypsies; they taught me a lot, they taught me how and why one must remain faithful to one’s past, to one’s roots. The photos I took date back to the 70s and 80s and are perhaps evidence of their last period of nomadic and undisturbed life. It is a people that has never fought wars and that does not like to command and dominate. They are used to the suffering that never fails in history. When I photographed them, many of them still wore traditional clothes, they were musicians, worked metals, they were also predators: theft on the one hand and begging on the other. I lived with the gypsies in Bosnia, I was alone, and I am left with a memory of people who are not hypocritical, loyal and with a strong sense of belonging to the group.
